- Seated Male Figure
- Artist
- Artist Unknown, African, Yombe Peoples Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Physical Description
- Small, carved male figure, seated atop a block, with legs crossed. The naturalism with which the expressive face is carved, the high crested coiffure (or chiefly cap?) and the progressive foreshortening of the body show the importance given to the head in Yombe aesthetics. The figure's eyes are mirrored glass, and the upper body, face and head are studded with brass tacks. A slight vertical crack can be seen at the figure's sternum.
- The Yombe figure was identified for UMMA by Allen Roberts and Mary (Polly) Nooter Roberts. There was a discrepency regarding the dating of the piece: the export paperwork said "circa 1830", but the dealer's catalogue said early 19th c. When asked to help resolve the dating, Polly Nooter Roberts replied: "As for the Yombe figure, I can tell you with certainty that it is NOT early 20th century, and is definitely from the 19th century, if not earlier. I cannot confirm the 1830 date, but I would be more inclined to believe that than the early 20th century. So, I think you can confidently say 19th century, and perhaps you can go ahead and use the paperwork that says 1830 since that was supplied with it." See e-mail to Carole McNamara, 1/12/00.

- Adam and Eve Lamenting over the Corpse of Abel, plate 6 from History of the First Parents of Man, set of six prints
- Artist
- Jan Saenredam
- Physical Description
- This engraving is a vertical format. Dominating the foreground are three figures on a slight hill with a large tree. In front of the tree is the corpse of Abel (a strong young man with flowing cloth around his waist) with his head in the shadows. Kneeling over him are Adam and Eve. Adam, a muscular older man with a white beard, clutches his hands together and leans toward his dead son. Eve, covered only from the waist down, throws her arms out in the air above her son and moves towards him on her knees. The tree behind them has a sturdy trunk that splits into three heavy branches and these limbs echo the placement of Eve's back and right arm. On the right is a road leading to a background scene. In the far background Cain and Abel are shown making offerings to God on altars, with Abel’s offering rising higher than Cain’s. In the middle ground along the road, Cain is shown raising a weapon to kill Abel. At the bottom of the work are four lines of text and a signature.

- Physical Description
- The two-handed figure stands in relaxed posture on a base consisting of square and round forms. At the bottom of each shape stylized lotus petals are incised. His right hand is extended outwards and would have been holding an arrow and he left arm is extended up to his die to hold a bow. He wears much of jewelry including anklets bracelets, armlets, necklace and shoulder loops, belts with pendant elements and a sacred thread reaching just below his waist. He wears a lower garment with incised lines delineating the folds and sections that flare out to either side. He wears an elaborate crown. One element extends over his right shoulder, which may either be part of his quiver of arrows or a broken section of a halo. He wears a conical headdress incised with a worn pattern. His face is sharply stylized with a long straight nose and wide, open eyes.
