St. Luke and St. Mark with a Portrait of the Virgin and Child

Ludolphe Buesinck

Two seated men, depicted in three-quarter length, with flowing beards and long robes look out from this print. A painting of a seated woman holding a child on her lap sits on an easel between them. A closed book is placed before the man on the left, and a second book sits open next to the figure on the right. This man holds a mahlstick, used by painters to steady their hand as they work, in his right hand. A palette and brushes are placed on a ledge in front of him.

La Justice Protégé les Arts

Gilles Demarteau

This crayon-manner engraving printed in sanguine depicts a grouping of figures arranged in a celestial space and positioned against clouds. A large female figure draped in cloth dominates the upper portion of the composition. She holds a set of scales in her left hand. Two female figures, one clothed, one nude, gather below at this figure’s sandaled feet in the center left of the composition. The clothed figure holds a palette and paintbrushes while the nude figure holds a mallet and a sculpted portrait of a man’s face. At the bottom right three male figures, one of whom wrestles a snake, appear to be attacking the female figure holding the palette. A clothed figure donning a helmet protects the figure holding the scales in the upper right.

Do yu Get it

Martin Johnson

7-sided frame made of reclaimed wood moulding and slats nailed together and backed with strips of green felt, possibly from a pool table. Gold wire traces the wood frame, and is accented with a fuzz ball or googly eye at each corner. A toy car is placed on the gold wire “track” at bottom center; car racing flag stickers attached to the frame in a couple places. Three pieces of thread are strung horizontally across the frame, a “spider web” attached to top two lines with puffy paint. A wood (?) cutout of a smiling joker mouth hung from web by wire.

As Long as I Don't Have to Get Up Before 11:00

Mark Kostabi

Ink drawing on paper. Black wash ground, with two figures drawn in opaque black ink. A comic figure who is shirtless and in boxers, with his beer belly hanging out, and whose pointy rimmed hat is reminiscent of the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz, dances at the center of an ominous scene. His right leg has been kicked through a television set that he holds with his right hand. Scissors fall from his left hand towards what looks like a two-slot toaster. A black, horned beast lurks in the background, holding a phone overhead that has two earpieces, but no cradle. The scene is possibly set in a graveyard; the edifice silhouetting behind the scarecrow figure is shaped like a headstone.

Plum Blossoms, after Jin Nong

Li Jishou (Li Chi-shou)

The branches of a plum tree stretch skyward, skillfully utilizing the vertical space of this hanging scroll. Black dots are used as accents along the branches, making them look knotted and full of texture. These heavy features are offset by the delicate depiction of plum blossoms. Calligraphic text is in the upper right corner, with two seals.
