Standing Buddha in Abhaya-vara mudra

Gilt bronze standing Buddha on lotus pedestal. He is clothed in monastic robes with cascading U-shaped folds, similar to the gentle folds of his neck. His hands ake the form of two mudras: the abhaya (“have no fear”) mudra with the right hand, and varada (“wishes are granted”) mudra with the left.

It is well proportioned overall and represent Buddha in a standing position; a position quite popular in Unified Shilla Buddhist sculpture. The Ushinisha on the top of Buddha's head is tall, voluminous and black. The face is plump and facial features, including the eyes, nose and the mouth, are all rather small. The earlobes hang are hanging and the three curved lines on the neck are highly distinct.

Jar with abstract dragon design

Round porcelain jar with iron pigment under colorless glaze. An abstract dragon spirals around and up the body of the piece, marked by quick brushstrokes indicating scales and unrestrained swirls indicating features such as its head and feet. A slight valley in the contour of the jar marks where two separately thrown pieces were joined together.

The foot is rather small for the size of the body.

Buncheong ware shallow bowl with stamped, inlaid floral designs

It has a relatively wide mouth for its height and slighly surving sides. Originally, this tpye of bowl was first produced in celadon in the late Goryeo period and was made in large numbers in buncheong ware during the early Joseon period. The foot is shallow and roughly trimmed.

It has a slightly inverted rim and mildly surved sides tapering gradually to a narrow foot. The graze is dark greenish blue in cloor, leaning toward green. The foot was carved out from the inside tl a very shallow depth. Two parrots was carved symmetrically.

It is simple in shape, like a donut but with a sharply trimmed rim in the manner of a metal vessel. The hole in the middle is believed to be a symbol of Eastern philosophy. Designs are painted on the surface in cobalt blue pigment.

The vase has a slightly outward-turned rim and a short neck. The elegantly-shaped bottle flares out to a broad shoulder, then tapers gradually to a slim waist before flaring out once more at the base. The shoulder, mid-belly and base of the vase are decorated with black and white clay-inlaid cloud, crane and butterfly motifs.

Ewer in the shape of a melon with inlaid floral and butterfly designs

It is in the shape of a sectioned melon. The body is vertically divided into ten sections and to create an embossed effect, the grooves between each two sections were pressed down slightly. The lid has a loop attached at the top. It is decorated on all sides with black and white inlaid design of butterfly, chrysanthemum and peony with stem and foliage. The spout and handle was broken and restored. The lid seems to be fake.

Cinerary urn with concentric circles design

Stoneware jar with natural ash glaze, squat body and lid. Along the widest horizontal stretch is a design of incised concentric circles, with another row above consisting of circles comprised of a pattern of impressions marking the edge of each circle. The convex curve of the lid also contains a row of incised concentric circles, before sloping into a concave valley, and rising up again to a small plateau. It is on this landing that a cintamani style knob rests.

Stoneware jar with natural ash glaze and bell-shaped lid. Along the widest horizontal stretch of the base is an incised circle-and-dot design. A variation on this pattern also loops around the lid, topped by a line marking a ring along the surface of the lid, and incised lines extending outward from a button-shaped knob.

It is in the shape of a flat disk with octagonal sides, a type that was widely produced in the 19th century. The center of the top surface features a flower petal in a darkish cobalt blue pigment. A pale blue glaze applied over the entire surface, but has a slightly hue. The pigment used on the flower is also applied around the edgesof the octagon, more heavily so in the corners.

This flower-shaped celadon bottle with impressed decorations has a flat bottom and slanting sides. The form of the vessel was produced using a mold. The thick wall gives the bowl a rough appearance. The everted mouth forms a flat rim in the shape of a flower. A green glaze is applied to the entire surface.
