- Subject Matter
- A student of Shunk?sai Hokush?, Hokuei was an active Osaka-based printmaker during the first decades of the ninteenth century. A follower of Hokusai, Hokuei became known for his interest in violence and exaggeration. Here the artist has depicted Iwai Shinjaku, an Osaka performer who would inspire a lineage of kabuki actors hailing from Kansai during the late Edo and Meiji periods. This image is part of a triptych that, when seen together, creates a sense of movement between the various roles played by Iwai Shinjaku I. Interestingly, Shirabyôshi dancers were female dancers of the 12th century Japanese Imperial court who dressed as men. The performance of a man playing a woman dressed as a man creates a complex mise en âbime of gender in this print.
