Subject Matter
Photographic portrait of artist Jean Arp in extreme close-up exhibiting Newman’s signature style of incorporating undulating curves and smooth surfaces. Cropped to show only Arp’s his right eye, cheek, forehead, hand and a bit of his shirt cuff with a curving unidentifiable vertical form obscuring the sitter’s face, Newman infuses the photograph with modernist sensibility and abstract harmony.
