Subject Matter
This image portrays the popular Shirabyôshi dance - a traditional dance originally performed by a woman dressed as a man. The white face of shirabyôshi dancers is said to have been the precedent for geisha makeup following the Heian period. The costume is said to derive from traditional Shinto attire worn by men.
