The poem consists of 8 lines of 5 characters each, in classic Chinese-style regulated verse. The translation: The Yangtzu River flows without end; In its vastness: one solitary boat. Laughing and drinking, I contemplate heaven and earth, In my empty breast I embrace the stars. The scenery, having dispelled the heat of summer, Is transformed by orchid and cassia to the purity of autumn. All things and self seem never-ending, This life, ultimately, is just to float.... --tr. by Stephen Addiss and K.S. Wong)
