To make matters worse, Haggerty, Miller's running mate at forward, was taken ill and was out of the line-up for some time. Mather called into play all of his initiative to place a team upon the floor to meet Minnesota. Piper and Kipke filled the breech to perfection and Minnesota was turned back 34-18. A Minnesota rally that came late in the game was of no avail and Michigan won without being pushed. Wisconsin, an impressive record behind them, met Michigan in Ann Arbor on January 14. That the Wolverine five lost I8-I5 does not mar the fact that this was one of the best games ever played on the floor of Waterman gymnasium. In a game marked by exceptional basketball by both teams it is a difficult task to pick an outstanding star. It is safe to say however that Captain Ely of Michigan in this contest branded himself as one of the best pivot men that ever wore a Maize and Blue uniform. The teams were evenly matched,... and until the last few minutes of play when Wisconsin gained a three point lead, the outcome was always in doubt. ' ^ Undaunted by the loss of the Wisconsin game, Michigan met and defeated Northwestern 27-13 at Evanston, on February 17. Captain Ely scored 19 of the points credited to, |Michigan and was a tower of strength both in offensive and defensive play. Michigan guards allowed Northwestern few shots at the basket save from the center of the floor. A second defeat at the hands of Wisconsin, at Madison on February HENDERSON 19 by a score of i6-11, definitely ended "Bill" substituted at forward in the faint hopes Michigan had retained several Conference games. He is an exceptional shot. for a tied Conference championship. Like the first Badger-Wolverine contest, the outcome hung in the balance until near the end of the game. Closeguarding on the part of both teams and ragged shooting on the part of Michigan marked the contest. February 22 marked the second defeatof the Ohio courtmen by Michigan 39-14. Captain Ely, with a total of 24 points, was the mainstay of the Wolverine machine. Iowa, with an undefeated record, came to Ann Arbor for the closing contest of the season and defeated Michigan I9-18 before the largest crowd that ever saw a basketball game at Michigan.
