The first score came in the second quarter when, following a long pass from Uteritz to Kipke, Blott made a place kick from the 18-yard line. The third quarter started strong when Curran nailed a long pass and advanced to the 17-yard line. Steger received another pass from Uteritz and went over for the first touchdown. Kipke added another touchdown on a pass and Steger made the last after a steady march down the field, through Ohio's line. Kipke's punting, Steger's running, and Uteritz' generalship stood out in the backfield while Muirhead stopped Ohio backs repeatedly. Michigan Agricultural College furnished a good practice game for the Varsity, the final score being 37-0. Every man on the Michigan bench played in the game, which was featured by stellar plays throughout. Iowa followed M. A. C. on the schedule. This game was of particular interest, due to the fact that Michigan and Iowa had tied for the Championship of the Conference in 1922. The Wolverines journeyed to Iowa City, knowing that they would be faced by a heavier team than their own, but the deceptive attack which Uteritz shot into the Cornhuskers swept them off their feet, allowing Michigan to score early in the game. Michigan scored early in the first quarter when Jack Blott ran down the field and scooped up one of Kipke's punts that had been touched by an opposing end and took the ball over for a touchdown. Kipke added three points to Michigan's score when he succeeded in dropkicking the ball from the 40-yard line. Iowa scored in the second quarter when one of Uteritz' passes was intercepted, and a drop-kick made from the 15-yard line. This was the first time in the season that Michigan's opponent had scored. Iowa was in position to score during the last quarter, but Slaughter intercepted a pass and Kipke punted out of danger. That the game was exceptionally hard fought, is shown by the, final score of 9-3. Blott, Slaughter, and Muirhead played a great game on the line, while Kipke and Steger were the outstanding performers in the backfield. The United States Marines have something to be proud of inasmuch as they were the only eleven to score a touchdown against Michigan during the season. The game was witnessed by a group of notables, including Secretary Denby and others. Early in the opening quarter, the Marines took the ball on the eleven-yard line and attempted a drop-kick. This was blocked, but the Marines recovered, giving them first down. Two line bucks gave them their first down, and one yard to go. The line held for two downs, but on the third, Neal went over for a touchdown. Michigan was in position to score twice in the first quarter, but failed. In the second quarter Uteritz went over for Michigan's first score on a sneak play. At the beginning of the third quarter, Uteritz opened up with a variety of plays almost all of which gained for Michigan. In the last quarter Blott went back to try for a kick with - -- - -- - -- - [226 I
