Annotation
[1] ALS, IHi. Numerous facsimiles of this letter have been supposed by their owners to be the original autograph manuscript written by Lincoln because they were printed many years ago and have the appearance of genuine manuscripts. The editors have not been able to certify the present location or ownership of the original letter, but there seems to be no doubt that the facsimiles were made from a genuine letter. Mrs. Amanda H. Hall was the daughter of Reverend William M. Ferry, an early settler of Ottawa County, Michigan. Her husband was Henry C. Hall of Ashfield, Massachusetts. Her brother was Representative Thomas W. Ferry of Michigan. See William M. Ferry, ``Ottawa's Old Settlers,'' Michigan Pioneer and Historical Collections, XXX (1905), 572-73.
