[1]   ALS, NAuE. Thomas D. Jones was a sculptor, and John J. Piatt a poet who had been secretary to George D. Prentice of the Louisville Journal, and later a clerk in the Treasury Department (1861-1867). No consular appointment is of record for either man until Piatt became consul at Cork, Ireland, 1882-1892.
