[1]   AES, IHi. Lincoln's endorsement appears on a letter of General Gabriel R. Paul, Newport, Kentucky, to Green C. Smith, January 5, 1865, asking assistance in obtaining the exchange of his son, Captain Augustus C. Paul, captured at the Battle of Spotsylvania. General Paul's letter concludes: ``I can write but a little being completely blind from the effects of the wound I received in battle [at Gettysburg]---but I trust I have said enough to interest you in the case.'' Augustus C. Paul remained a prisoner until the end of the war.
