Burbridge had telegraphed General John C. Breckinridge, Department of West Virginia, on February 14, that C. K. Johnson, claiming to be a Lieutenant Colonel in the Confederate Army, had been tried on charges of being a spy (OR, II, VIII, 223). AGO General Court Martial Orders No. 314, June 19, 1865, confirmed the death sentence in Johnson's case and ordered his execution.
