[1]   ALS, DNA WR RG 107, Presidential Telegrams, I, 352. No reply has been found from Burbridge or any other officer. Burbridge was relieved of his command on February 22 (OR, I, XLIX, I, 756). Burbridge had telegraphed General John C. Breckinridge, Department of West Virginia, on February 14, that C. K. Johnson, claiming to be a Lieutenant Colonel in the Confederate Army, had been tried on charges of being a spy (OR, II, VIII, 223). AGO General Court Martial Orders No. 314, June 19, 1865, confirmed the death sentence in Johnson's case and ordered his execution.
