Ballard, whose name Lincoln misspelled because of an incorrect signature on the telegram received, was corresponding secretary of the Young Men's Republican Union of New York. His telegram of September 24 reads: ``A deputation from the New York Young Mens republican union desires a brief interview on tuesday next will it be convenient & agreeable to you to grant it. Please reply by telegraph'' (DLC-RTL).
