 ALS-P, ISLA. Twelve unattached companies of heavy artillery raised in the summer of 1864 for coastal defense in Massachusetts were sent to Washington in September to garrison forts around the District of Columbia. On November 12, 1864, these companies were consolidated into the Fourth Massachusetts Heavy Artillery (AGO Special Orders No. 395), and continued in the defenses of the capital until mustered out on June 17, 1865.
