[1]   AES, owned by R. S. Ruwitch, Chicago, Illinois. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from General George B. McClellan, August 22, 1861, asking appointment of Richard B. Irwin of the District of Columbia as captain and aide-de-camp. Irwin's appointment, made the same day, was confirmed by the Senate on February 3, 1862.
