[1]   ALS, ICHi. This letter is incorrectly dated January 25, 1858, in Hertz, II, 707. Alexander Campbell, a leading Republican of LaSalle, Illinois, was elected state representative in 1858. Lincoln had drawn on Campbell in 1856 for ``between $200 and $300.'' Campbell did not answer Lincoln's query until August 2, explaining that he had hoped to make some collections but had been unsuccessful and therefore could not advance any money at the time, though he hoped to be able to send $50 later on (DLC-RTL).
