[1] ALS, PHi, Brayman replied from Springfield on October 7 enclosing his personal check for $250 as a general retainer fee. The so-called ``receipt'' for this fee, preserved in Brayman's papers, is merely the record kept by Brayman of the transaction and does not bear Lincoln's signature.
