Memorandum Concerning Orville Paddock and William S. Wallace1Jump to section

[May 1, 1849?]

I have already recommended W. S. Wallace2Jump to section for Pension Agent at this place. It is, however, due the truth, to say that Orville Paddock,3Jump to section above recommended, is every way qualified for the office; and that the persons recommending him, are of our business men, and best whig citizens.

Annotation

[1]   AD, DLC-RTL. This slip of paper may have been a draft of an endorsement which Lincoln wrote on the bottom of a petition in favor of Paddock which he forwarded to the commissioner of pensions.

[2]   Lincoln's recommendation of Wallace has not been found, the document having disappeared from the Interior Department files, but the covering jacket which remains in the file indicates that Wallace was appointed May 31, 1849. The letter recommending William Butler (supra, April 7) may never have been sent, Butler having refused the recommendation in hopes of obtaining the receivership of the land office for which Lincoln would not recommend him, and Lincoln's recommendation of Wallace may have been made instead of Butler.

[3]   Orville Paddock was a resident of Springfield.
