The undersigned, from knowledge of S. A. CORNEAU, and having confidence in his ability to perform the duties of clerk of the supreme court, of the second grand division of Illinois, do recommend him, to the members of the bar and public, as a competent person to fill said office.

[1] Illinois Journal, April 26, 1855. The endorsement carries names of thirtyone attorneys, including Lincoln's. A similar endorsement appeared in other papers over the state. Corneau, a resident of Springfield prominent in civic affairs, had previously been bailiff of the U.S. District Court.
