. . . . While Maj. HARRIS was speaking, Mr. LINCOLN of Springfield, arrived in the stage, and by request he addressed the crowd assembled in defense of the Missouri Compromise, and in opposition to so much of the Nebraska bill as repeals it---speaking more than two hours. . . .

[1] Alton Daily Telegraph, August 31, 1854. A report in the Illinois State Register, September 1, adds to the indicated content of Lincoln's speech the fact that Lincoln spoke also ``against the repeal of the fugitive slave law.'' Both reports are chiefly concerned with the campaign speech of Major Thomas L. Harris, Democratic candidate for congress.
