To His Excellency, the Governor of the State of Illinois.
We, the undersigned, chiefly citizens of Moultrie and Shelby counties, respectfully represent that one John A. L. Crockett, a man of about twentysix years of age, has been found guilty of the crime of manslaughter by a jury in the circuit court of said Moultrie county, and has been sentenced to the Penitentiary for the term of two years. We further represent that said Crockett has been, from his infancy, only not quite an ideot, being at least, of the very lowest grade of intellect above absolute ideocy. We, therefore, (several of us being jurors who sat on the trial) believing that his punishment can result in no public good, respectfully recommend that he be pardoned.
