[1] Illinois Weekly Journal, July 21, 1852. Henry Clay died June 29 at Washington, D.C. On July 6, citizens of Springfield held two memorial meetings. The first was conducted at the Episcopal Church by the Reverend Charles Dresser; afterwards a procession moved to the Hall of Representatives, where Lincoln delivered his eulogy. ``During the proceedings business was suspended, stores closed, and everything announced the general sorrow at the great national bereavement.'' (Journal, July 9).
