[1] ADS, IHi. The date supplied for this fragment rests on the assumption that the entire letter of which this is the last page was probably written by Lincoln during the scramble for patronage that followed the inauguration of Zachary Taylor. Lincoln's other correspondence of this period affords ample ground for conjecturing the name of the Whig to whom Lincoln and Baker were referring. Baker had moved to Galena, Illinois, following the Mexican War and had been elected to the Thirty-first Congress, thus following Lincoln as the lone Whig of Illinois.
