Annotation
[1] AES, RPB, Lincoln's endorsement, probably addressed to the War Department, appears on the envelope in which the first portion of a letter dated December 14, 1848 is enclosed, the remainder containing the signature being lost. Internal evidence establishes the probability that the letter was from Henry Newman, concerning back pay due his son Joseph who was killed in the war with Mexico (vide infra, affidavit concerning Joseph Newman, January 4, 1849).
