Resolved, That a select committee of five be appointed to inquire into the expediency of incorporating a company to construct a canal upon the valley of the Sangamon river, and that they report by bill or otherwise.

[1] House Journal, Ninth General Assembly, Second Session, p. 34. The resolution was adopted, and Lincoln was made a member of the select committee. On December 12, he reported a bill, not his own, to incorporate the Beardstown and Sangamon Canal Company (vide infra, Lincoln's amendment, December 12, 1835).
