Annotation

[1]   AES, IHi. See Lincoln to Davis, June 26, 1848 (infra). Lincoln's endorsement is on the back of Davis' letter to Lincoln. Further endorsements of the Treasury Department indicate that pay due his son Thomas, a second lieutenant in the Mounted Rifles Regiment who was killed in the Mexican War, had been paid; but no indication is given concerning Davis' further claim of additional pay due of Thomas as a mounted volunteer in a Texas regiment. Davis specifies that he needs the money to pay his son's debts.
