Debate in Illinois Legislature
Concerning Bill to Change Lines of Menard County [1]

February 22, 1841

Mr. LINCOLN was in favor of the reference. If, as his colleague [2] had stated, the people directly interested in this matter were opposed to the measure, he should most certainly oppose the bill---he would obey the will of his constituents. He hoped the reference would be had.

[2]   Josiah Francis of Sangamon had moved to refer the bill to a select committee. The motion failed and the bill was ordered to be engrossed.
