Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln. Volume 1.
Lincoln, Abraham, 1809-1865.
January 9, 1841

Mr. LINCOLN thought as the subject had come up, and seemed likely to be a painful one, the best course would be to dispose ofPage  227 the matter in a manner the least painful. He would be sorry to see a resolution of this kind pass, calculated to wound the feelings of him who had presented the petition. He hoped the resolution would be so modified.

Mr. LINCOLN then moved to strike out that portion of the resolution requiring the petition to be returned to the member presenting it.
