Jonathan G. Randall, Springfield, Ill.,
Rushville, Ill. June 16, 1840.

My Dear Sir---Your son Richard has just told me of his great loss. The rascally Whigs, through a mistake, took his trunk containing all his clothes off to Chicago, and his heart is almost broken. Make him up some new ones just as you know he needs and make his heart glad. Yours respectfully A. LINCOLN.

Annotation

[1]   Printed by Howard F. Dyson, ``Lincoln in Rushville,'' Transactions of the Illinois State Historical Society For the Year 1903, Publication No. 8. Illinois State Historical Library (1904), p. 226. According to Dyson, Richard Randall was apprenticed to Simeon Francis in the Sangamo Journal printing office. A delegation of Chicago Whigs had stored their baggage in the office during a convention which coincided with young Richard's first days in Springfield, and on departing took Richard's trunk by mistake.
