[1]   John Carroll Power, History of the Early Settlers of Sangamon County, Illinois (1876), p. 48. The location of the original document is unknown. The note was signed by one hundred and one citizens of Springfield including Lincoln. The amount represented the unpaid third installment of the $50,000 pledged by citizens of Springfield to the building of the new capitol building,

which remained unpaid because many of the original bondsmen had met financial ruin in the panic of 1837. Lincoln had not signed the original bond, as sometimes maintained, but did sign the note of later date.
