Full Record: x-0000.00.3415/3415P1

Large fragment of undyed woven linen fabric with parts of both selvedges and two multiple weft ribs near one edge. A very small (1 cm x 1 cm) fragment of high luster woven wool fabric with blue/black discontinuous wefts was found on this fragment, caught within one of the holes.

0000.00.3415

Large fragment of warp faced linen with rows of weft loops approximately every 3cm starting 16 cm from the fringed edge. Individual loops are from 2 - 3 cm apartand 3 cm long. The loops are uncut. A 5 cm section 4.2 cm from the fringed edge has no weft yarns.

0000.00.3416

Very large fragment of woven linen fabric with selvedges at both edges and two sections of supplementary weft patterning using red and green wool. There is fringe at one edge, the above measurement includes the fringe. The longest fringe is 14 cm. The first red and green pattern section is 17 cm from the fringe edge, measuring woven fabric only. This band is 0.7 cm wide and 26.5 cm long. The other band is 7.5 cm from the first band. This second band is the same size as the first. There arealso six weft bands which use thicker weft yarns. The warp and weft yarns are very unevenly spun.

0000.00.3417

Large fragment of woven fabric made from undyed linen. There is a fringe at one end (included in above measurement) which is from 3 cm to 7 cm long. There is no border to keep the weft from falling out. At the fringe end there is an unwoven area 3 cm from the edge of the weft that is almost 2 cm wide. Approximately in the center there are two weft yarns in the same shed. It is unknown if this was an openwork pattern area or if some of the wefts have been pulled out. Unevenly spun, but evenly woven.

0000.00.3418

Doll made from five layers of what appears to be the same yellowed woven wool fabric. The five pieces were folded and wrapped arounda group of red yarns. A 2-strand yarn secures the folded fragments at the doll’s “neck” by wrapping around twice and tying at the back. Brown hair, possibly human, was braided (3-strand) and wrapped around the outside layer of fabric. There are remnants of blue/black yarn that was braided with the hair at the top of the doll’s “head”. A single yarn was tied around the top two layers of woven fabric and the braided hair. Another single yarn was tied around the doll’s “neck” to help secure the braid on both sides. There area few stitches in some of the woven fragments.

Fragment of woven fabric with plied linen warp, remnants of linen weft wrapping and several colors of wool weft in bands as follows:

dark brown 2 picks

medium brown 2 or 3 picks

variegated blue/green 4.5 cm

red 1 cm

variegated brown 1.5 cm

purple/red 0.7 cm

blue/green 0.2 cm

off white/yellowed 1 cm

pink, alternating with blue/green 0.3 cm

brown 5.5 cm

Remnants of linen patterning (weft wrapping) appear throughout the fragment. The linen is very deteriorated but seems to be a roughly checkerboard pattern from the purple/red band to the 4.5 cm blue/green band. In the 5.5 cm wide brown band, the linen weft wrapping forms a semi circle near the edge, with the remainder of linen patterning too deteriorated to describe.

Fragment A -

The largest fragment of three pieces of wool fabric sewn together. The fabric is in two colors. 6.5 cm of fabric is woven in a brown/gold weft while 7.5 cm is woven in greenish weft. There are two rows of countered weft twining in the brown section. Each weft twining loop goes over 3 or 4 warp threads and under 2 or 3. The rows areapproximately 1 cm apart, 0.2 cm from the green section. The greenish color may be the result of optical mixing or staining because under closer inspection the green yarns areactually blue/grey.

Fragment B -

Small fragment of wool fabric attached to 10305a by three lines of stitching. The warp is yellowed and the weft is blue/purple with a narrow weft band of the same yellow as the warp. The band is 0.3 cm wide and is almost in the center of the widest part of the fragment. Two edges have been turned under where this piece is sewn to the main fabric. Another row of stitching attaches the folded edge of the main fabric to this fragment.

Fragment C -

This fragment has a folded hem which has been sewn to 10305a by two rows of different color stitches. Part of it has been bent, folded and sewn under itself to form, in one place, three layers. The bent section, at this point, is perpedicular to the rest of the fragment. The fold may have been sewn down adjacent to the hem of 10305a. Several large stitches of a single yarn hold the two fabrics together and extend into the folded part of 10305c.
