- Pleased to hear from his cousin. Has not had any duty in the field since returning; on arriving in Washington, the provost marshall appointed him to Camp Stoneman and after a week was detached from the 1st Division and placed as sergeant major in the 3rd Division Cavalry Corps. Has a good wall tent for sleeping, a cook, and good living facilities. "I live on the top shelf jest now." Updates on Phena and friends from Cherry Creek. Recruits are coming in. If Nelson hears of anyone afraid of the draft, tell them to enlist and the draft won't happen. Would rather be in the field with his regiment. Is on a three year commission. Hopes the war will play out over the winter. Copperheadism.
