Pileus 1.2-2.4 cm broad, convex or nearly plane, subtawny, glabrous,
dry, the margin deflexed or incurved. Context whitish.
Lamellae adnate or slightly decurrent, somewhat tawny, inclining
toward ochraceous-tawny, thin, subdistant.
Stipe 2.5 cm long, 3-4 mm thick, concolorous, fibrillose or fibrillosesquamulose, equal, solid.
Spores 9-12 x 5.5-7 bu, elliptic to irregularly ovate in face view, inequilateral in profile, smooth, germ pore not distinct.
Basidia 30-43 x 7-10 /i, 4-spored. Pleurocystidia and cheilocystidia
none. Caulocystidia none.
Gill trama of hyphae 4-7 /u broad in subparallel arrangement, yellowish brown in KOH. Pileus cutis of appressed hyphae but some more
or less erect, brown, and incrusted. Pileus trama of interwoven hyphae
yellowish brown in KOH, dark brown in Melzer's reagent. Clamp connections present.
HABIT, HABITAT, AND DISTRIBUTION: On low ground, St. Paul Island,
Bering Sea. Known only from the type.
In our study of the type we were unable to find either pleurocystidia
or cheilocystidia. We place the species here with some reservations. For
instance, we doubt if the pileus was actually glabrous. On the assumption
that it was not, we have placed the species here. The evidence for this is
that incrusted brown epicuticular hyphae were demonstrated which
must have formed squamules at first. The large spores and lack of cheilocystidia would seem to place the species near P. aurea-if one disregards
size of the basidiocarp.

Pileus 7-20 (30) cm diam., convex to obtusely campanulate young,
expanding to obtusely umbonate or nearly plane finally; colors orangebuff to orange-ochraceous in buttons, usually becoming paler in age,
