188. Pholiota trullisata sp. nov.

Pileus 4-10 cm latus, convexus, viscidus, aurantio-brunneus, virgatus.
Lamellae albidae demum subolivaceo-griseae dein luteo-brunneae, confertae. Stipes 5-12(14) cm longus, 8-18 mm crassus, radicatus, sursum
albidus, deorsum luteus. Sporae 5.5-6.5 x 4-4.5 tL. Pleurocystidia 36-52
x 9-15 IJ. Specimen tipicum in Herb. Univ. Mich. conservatum est; legit
prope Santa Maria, Calif. 9 Jan. 1954, John L. Moore.
Pileus 4-10 cm broad, broadly convex with an inrolled margin, becoming nearly plane, with a whitish band of fibrils along the margin
from the veil, glabrous and slimy-viscid otherwise, virgate with dark
brown streaks against and orange brown disc and a light tan margin;
hygrophanous and fading on disc first to dingy yellowish tan. Context
pallid and without a distinctive odor and taste.
Lamellae white when veil breaks, becoming olive-drab and finally
dingy brown, close, adnexed, moderately broad, edges wavy.
Stipe 5-12 (14) cm long, single or compound, often sunken deeply
in the sand and clavate to trowel-shaped over the underground portion
(like Laccaria trullisata), 8-15 mm thick above ground line, with a
superior veil-line and white fibrillose above it, bright yellow below it
but this color soon fading, in addition with brown patches of fibrils (of
outer veil material?) which soon disappear, darkening in base around
worm holes, stuffed becoming hollow.
Spores rusty brown in deposit, 5.5-6.5 x 4-4.5,u, smooth; apical
pore extremely minute; shape in face view broadly ellipsoid, in profile
merely ellipsoid, very slightly compressed; color in KOH dull cinnamon,
about the same color in Melzer's reagent; wall about 0.3,u thick.
Basidia 4-spored, 17-23 X 6-7 IL, hyaline in KOH. Pleurocystidia
36-52 X 9-15,I, fusoid-ventricose, distinctly projecting, thin-walled,
smooth, apex obtuse, content in KOH orange-ochraceous in neck and
homogeneous. Cheilocystidia similar to pleurocystidia but smaller. Caulocystidia none or at very apex a few and these resembling cheilocystidia.
Gill trama a central area of parallel hyaline thin-walled hyphae
with inflated cells in age (up to 15 /z), ochraceous contorted oleiferous
hyphae also present (as seen in mounts revived in KOH); subhymenium
of narrow (2-4,u) hyaline hyphae in a gelatinous matrix. Pileus cutis
a thick gelatinous pellicle of narrow (2-4,u) hyaline to ochraceous
hyphae (revived in KOH), the hyphal walls becoming transversely
crinkled and collapsing; hypodermium of rusty brown compactly interwoven hyphae with smooth to incrusted walls, the hyphae not of greater
diameter than those of the context. Context hyphae 5-10 a, diam., not
much inflated, hyaline in KOH, yellowish in Melzer's reagent. Clamp
connections present.
