The North American species of Pholiota, by Alexander H. Smith and L. R. Hesler.

Smith ~ Hesler 309 OBSERVATIONS: This species is very similar to P. acutoconica var. acutoconica, but is at once distinguished by its more obese pleuro- and cheilocystidia, and deep chrome colored pileus. The more distant gills are a possible additional difference but more collections are needed to substantiate this. It is very likely that there is a difference in the color of the spore deposit, but again more data are needed on the character. When found it is likely to be mistaken for one of the P. alnicola group. 167. Pholiota scamboides sp. nov. Pileus 1-2.5(3) cm latus, obtu.sus, glutinosus, argillaceus. Lamellae pallidae demum pallide luteae, confertae, latae, adnatae. Stipes 1-2.5 cm longus, 2-2.5 mm crassus. Vellum sparsum, pallidum. Sporae 7-10.5 x 4-5.5 a. Pleurocystidia 36-55 x 9-16 p.. Specimen typicum in Herb. Univ. Mich. conservatulm est; legit prope Priest Lake, Idaho Oct. 5, 1964. Smith 71058. Pileus 1-2.5 (3) cm broad, obtusely conic with a curved in margin, glabrous, slimy viscid, color whitish-buff to finally pinkish buff, when dried slightly darker on the disc than margin, the latter about pinkish buff; veil leaving only a few traces as fibrils on the pileus margin. Context pliant, pallid, odor and taste not distinctive, KOH, no reaction, FeSO4 no reaction. Lamellae yellowish white (pale ivory yellowish), becoming dingy clay-color close, broad, adnate, when dried dingy yellow-brown. Stipe 1-2.5 cm long, 2-2.5 mm thick, equal coated to the gills with fine soft ivory yellowish fibrils (which are not part of the veil), color beneath the surface fibrils pinkish buff to cinnamon buff, finally clay color in basal part; veil pallid and very rudimentary (observable only on very small buttons). Spores 7-10.5 x 4-5.5 u/, smooth, apical pore minute; shape in face view ovate to subelliptic, in profile elliptic to obscurely inequilateral; color in KOH tawny, in Melzer's reagent slightly more cinnamon but paler; wall about 0.3 p/ thick. Basidia 22-30 x 7-8.5 pu, 4-spored (rarely 2-spored), clavate, hyaline to ochraceous in KOH. Pleurocystidia abundant, 36-48 (55) X 9-16.u, fusoid-ventricose with obtuse apex, smooth or with incrustations variously distributed, walls thin, content yellowish in KOH but not coagulated into a distinct body as revived in KOH, neck often rather short. Cheilocystidia similar to pleurocystidia. Caulocystidia more or less similar to pleurocystidia but usually the neck not as well differentiated varying more to clavate, often with yellow (in KOH) incrusting material on the upper part. Gill trama with a central area of regularly arranged hyphae of narrow (4-7 /i) greatly elongated cells, inflating in age; walls thin, smooth and hyaline; subhymenium a gelatinous layer of narrow (3-4 p,) diverging hyaline hyphae. Pileus cutis a thick gelatinous pellicle of hyphae
