The North American species of Pholiota, by Alexander H. Smith and L. R. Hesler.

246 The North American Species of Pholiota paper). Caulocystidia none observed except for a few semi-erect clavate ends of cortical hyphae. Gill trama of a wide central area of subparallel hyphae yellowish to hyaline in KOH, walls tlin and smooth, cells short to long and becoming inflated; subhymenium poorly developed as a narrow somewhat gelatinous zone of hyaline narrow (3-4 p.) hyphae. Pileus cutis a thick gelatinous pellicle of hyphae 2-4 p, diam., loosely interwoven, yellowish in KOH and some with incrusted walls; hypodermium a zone of non-gelatinous more or less inflated hyphae with heavy ochraceous incrustations as revived in KOH; context lhyphae yellow in KOH, thin walled, interwoven, and cells greatly inflated. Clamp connections present. HABIT, HABITAT, AND DISTRIBUTION: Gregarious on needle carpet under pine, Cave Junction, Ore., Dec. 1, 1937. Smith 9318, type. OIBSERVATIONS: This species is obviously very close to P. subminor in cystidial and spore features. It differs in growing on duff under conifers instead of on oak logs, in the stature of the basidiocarps, and in the weaker development of the gelatinous slb)hymenium. From P. velaglntino.sa it is readily distinct in its larger spores and less gelatinous veil. 129. Pholiota sequoiae sp. nov. Illtistrattions: Text figs. 474-4- 7(i.
