103. Pholiota romagnesiana sp. nov.
Pileus 3-8 cm latuis, obtusus delmum campanulatus, sordide luteolus,
squamnulosus. Lamellac confertae, latae, adnatae, pallide luteae. Stipes
6-12 (cm1 longis, 8-14 mmI crassus, solidus, connato-cespitosus, squamInlosus. Sporae 4-5 x 2.5-3 a. Pleurocystidia 32-46 X 9-13 Ai, clavata vel
cllipticopedicellata. Specimen typicum in Herb. Univ. Mich. conservatum
est; legit prope Santa Fe N. Mexico, Aug. 1964, Chas. Barrows 1739.
Pileus 3-8 cm broad, obtuse with an incurved margin, expanding to
broadly campanulate or nearly plane but with a low obtuse umbo,
ground color very pale dingy yellow (near cream color) and with small
ochraceous tawny scales over the surface, scales most numerous over
disc, scales recurved to appressed (reminding one of those of P. squarrosa). Context as in P. squarrosa but more pliant, taste pleasant, odor
pleasant.
Lamellae close, moderately broad, adnate becoming slightly adnexed,
cream-buff to slightly yellower (none completely colored by spores).
Stipe 6-12 cm long, about 8-14 mm thick, solid, equal, connate
below, surface scaly as in P. squarrosa with dry recurved scales up to the
ragged submembranous annulus or fibrillose veil-line, fibrillose-scurfy
above the line, concolorous with pileus except for scales and only weakly
fulvous at base as dried.
Spores 4-5 x 2.5-3 jL, smooth, no apical pore visible, elliptic to
ovate in face view, obscurely bean-shaped to nearly oblong in profile, in
KOH dingy ochraceous, in Melzer's reagent nearly hyaline.
Basidia 4-spored, 18 x 4 ut, hyaline to yellowish in KOH or Melzer's
reagent. Pleurocystidia 32-46 X 9-13 i,, clavate to elliptic-pedicellate or
clavate-mucronate, evenly refractive in KOH and Melzer's reagent, or
some with an even dull brown content (not typical chrysocystidia).
Cheilocystidia similar to pleurocystidia or clavate and thin-walled and up
to 18 Ji broad. Caulocystidia rare, present as fusoid end-cells of hyphae,
2-4 fu diam.
Gill trama with a gelatinous subhymenium and a hyaline floccose
central strand of subparallel hyphae, walls hyaline and smooth. Pileus
cutis a layer of narrow (2-4 ij) filaments interwoven, gelatinous and
often with yellow content; hypodermial region of greatly inflated hyphal
cells nearly colorless and with thin walls. Context hyphae with thickened
"double" walls beneath the hypodermium, hyaline, walls smooth, cells
mostly inflated. All hyphae inamyloid. Clamp connections present.
