General Description: Small spiny dorsal fin ahead of soft dorsal fin.
Specific Description: Anal fin with one spine and more than 20 rays

Distribution

Distribution: In southern Great Lakes-St. Lawrence drainage; Mississippi basin to the Gulf.

Ecology

Ecology: Schools in quiet water. This egg-laying species is replaced in Georgia and Florida by a sister form that bears live young. Feed on small crustaceans and insects. Length to 13 cm.
