Description

General Description: These are soft-rayed fishes with toothless jaws, but morphologically specialized fifth gill arches with one or two rows of distinctive teeth. Scales are cycloid, the head is scaleless, there are 19 principal caudal rays and in native American forms the dorsal and anal fins are short. The anal fin is closer to the middle of the body than to the caudal fin.
Specific Description: Same as Ohio Stoneroller, but lateral line scales 49-55; scales around body 39-46; gape narrow.

Distribution

Distribution: Upper Mississippi drainage and adjacent Great Lakes area.

Ecology

Ecology: A mound nest builder, usually in clear creeks. Food includes algae and diatoms. Length to 15 cm.
