The Department of the History of Art 's electronic database consists of approximately 257,000 text records that catalog the analog and digital holdings of the Eleanor S. Collins Visual Resources Collections (VRC). The VRC is a repository whose combined image collections contain approximately 577,000 items. The collection, located in rooms 40/45 Tappan Hall, is used primarily to support the teaching mission of the Department of the History of Art. Borrowing privileges are extended to other members of the university community when such loans do not interfere with internal needs. The facility is open to borrowers from 9:00 - 5:00, Monday through Friday.
The core of these collections includes 310,000 35-mm. slides and
50,000 lantern slides. In addition there are more than 186,000
archival research photographs, and negative collections of
approximately 31,000 original items. In addition to augmenting and
maintaining these vast resources, the department is involved in
digital imaging projects that have facilitated both classroom teaching
and web course sites. To date (2/2004), the collection has
approximately 15,000 digital images. The VRC grows by approximately
6,000 analog and 3,000 digital images annually.
