In Frawnce þer was a man̛ of grete mekenes &
mercie, & inspeciaƚƚ vnto laysers, vnto so mekuƚƚ
þat wharesom-evur he mett þaim he wolde giff þaim
almos. So on̛ a tyme hym̛ happynd̛ to mete a man̛
þat was passand̛ horrible lepre, & wolde hafe
giffen̛ hym̛ almos. And he said̛; "Nay, I wiƚƚ no
money. Bod I pray þe wype þe filthe fro my nease." And
þis man̛, furste with his fynger & syne with his sarke
skirte, wypid it als softlye as he cuthe. Þan̛ þe
layser man̛ sayd̛; "I may not suffer so mekyƚƚ
sharpnes, & þerfor̛ I pray þe lykk̘ it away
with þi tong." And he neuer-þe-les, þuf aƚƚ
his natur vggid þer-wit, yit he lykkid̛ it away with his
tong. And sodanlie oute of þe layzer nese in-to his mouthe
þer feƚƚ ij precious stonys , &
furthwith, evyn̛ at he say, þis layser stevend̛
vp̛ vnto hevyn̛. et c̛.
