Sewell P. Barker was born in Vermont, on July 7, 1818. He taught school in the area around Rochester, New York, in the early 1840s and later served as principal of a school in Buffalo, New York. He was an ordained Methodist Episcopal minister. On December 14, 1843, Barker married Ruth Eliza Dean (October 28, 1826-March 7, 1908) in Spencerport, New York. They had nine children, of whom five survived past childhood: Lawrence Stiles (b. 1851), Charles Marvin (b. 1856), James Raymond (b. 1859), Mertie Amanda (b. 1863), and Harriet (b. 1868). Sewell P. Barker died on March 30, 1900.
