Levi Henry Elwell was born in Northampton, Massachusetts, on March 22, 1854, the son of Levi Henry Elwell and Harriet Adaline Elwell. After receiving a bachelor's degree from Amherst College in 1875, he spent a year teaching in Poughkeepsie, New York, before returning to Amherst, where he became a professor of Greek at his alma mater. He married Abbie Miner Nickerson (1858-1936), a graduate of Vassar College, on December 20, 1883, and they had three surviving children: Marion Freeman (1884-1977), Florence Rose (1888-1947), and James Henry (1896-1957). Levi H. Elwell died on December 27, 1916. Both Marion and Florence Elwell attended Vassar College, graduating in 1907 and 1911, respectively. Marion became a teacher and Florence temporarily moved to Iowa. James Elwell graduated from Amherst College in 1919 and married Alice Kathryn Sears.
