Seth Comstock (1772-1853) was born in Norwalk, Connecticut, the son of David Comstock (1720-1783) and Rebekah Grumman (1727-1812). He and his brother Daniel lived in Danbury, Connecticut, where they owned a paper mill and a store, and he served as an officer during the War of 1812. On September 15, 1793, he married Betsey Gregory (1772-1817); their children were Hannah (1794-1805), Evalina (1796-1855), Elizabeth Maria (1800-1892), David Augustus (1804-1855), and William Philander (1808-1877). William Philander Comstock and his first wife, Sarah W. Starr (1811-1838), had no children; following her death, he married Nancy B. Cogswell. They had six surviving children: Lois Starr, Sarah Elizabeth, William Cogswell, Elizabeth Joy, Mary Evelina, and Charles Henry.
