Albert H. Shaw was born in New York on July 10, 1816, and spent at least part of his youth working on his family farm in the vicinity of Schuyler Falls, New York. Shaw briefly served in a local militia, traveling to Champlain, New York, in February 1838, to offer support to Canadians rebelling against British rule. After several days, the force disbanded without being called into action.
