The African American History collection contains miscellaneous single-items related to various aspects of African American life, slavery, and abolition. The items span 1729 to 1970, but the bulk is concentrated around 1800-1865. Topics addressed in the letters and documents include the experiences and work of slaves in the North and South; the buying and selling of slaves; African American participation in the French and Indian War, American Revolution, and Civil War; abolitionists and abolition societies; the American Colonization Society; the lives of freed slaves; the education of free African Americans; and many other subjects.
