Collection Scope and Content Note

The Rosa Blach letters are comprised of 13 love letters written by her beau and husband, Coleman Blach, in 1894 and 1896. The first 5 items in the collection are letters, each of which was composed over the course of several days. Coleman described his life as a salesman in the spring and summer of 1894, and often wrote of his love for Rosa and for his work, using a code when discussing specific clients. He expressed his hope of raising enough money to propose to her, and kept her informed on the progress of his financial savings. Of the remaining 8 letters, Coleman wrote 7 in 1896, just after the couple's wedding, describing his daily life and work in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Birmingham, Alabama. These letters often contain news of the Blach family, as well as continued pronouncements of love to Rosa. Coleman's sister Flora wrote the final letter in the collection, which is undated; she anticipated her brother's upcoming journey to California to move Rosa to Birmingham to live with the Blach family.
