Johanna Gleeson was born in Ireland in 1856 or 1857 and emigrated to the United States around 1877. She joined her sister Maggie in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she became a domestic servant for the Newbold family. In 1881 or 1882, Johanna Gleeson moved to Denver, Colorado; on March 28, 1883, she married her cousin, Michael Gleeson (1855-1925), who had relocated to Denver from Davisville (now Davis), California, in 1880. In Denver, Michael Gleeson was a railroad brakeman before undergoing a below-ankle amputation as a result of an on-the-job accident; he then worked as a clerk for a railroad company. Michael and Johanna Gleeson had seven children, including Maggie, Thomas, Joseph, John, and William. Johanna Gleeson died in 1921.
