Biographical/Historical Note

George Millspaugh Chase was born on May 26, 1896, the son of Charles and Ella Chase. He worked for the YMCA in Poughkeepsie, New York, prior to World War I, served as a member of the New York Naval Militia, and joined the United States Navy around October 1917. Chase served as a quartermaster on the Lydonia from October 1917-March 1918, when he sustained a knee injury. In June 1918, he was sent to Brooklyn, New York; he recuperated there and in Poughkeepsie before receing a medical discharge in September 1918. After the war, Chase worked for the YMCA in Rahway, New Jersey; La Porte, Indiana; and Kokomo, Indiana. He married Catherine Elizabeth Bunn of La Porte on May 13, 1920.
